Fiat finds Russian partner to build auto plant in Saint-Petersburg |
Sources: MOSCOW, Dec 21 (PRIME) -- Italian automaker Fiat has found a local partner to take part in the construction of a car plant in the Russian city of St. Petersburg, a source at the city’s administration and a source familiar with Fiat’s plans said late Tuesday, as cited by RIA Novosti.
RBC Daily reported Wednesday quoting a source familiar with the talks that Russia’s largest bank Sberbank is to act as Fiat’s partner. It is expected to finance the construction and receive a stake in the future facility. Investments into the facility were planned at 800 million–900 million euros.
In late June, Fiat signed an industry assembly agreement with the Economic Development Ministry, under which the company is to annually produce about 120,000 cars in Russia, as well as build an engine production plant. The company is expected to invest over U.S. $1 billion in the project. Initially, Fiat planned to build a car plant in the city of Nizhny Novgorod on the Volga, but later dropped the plans and started looking for another site.
The source at the St. Petersburg administration said that a final decision to build the plant in St. Petersburg has been made, with only certain details remaining to be discussed.
Fiat plans to produce Jeep sport utility vehicles at the plant, the source familiar with Fiat’s plans said.
RBC Daily said that the plant will be located in the St. Petersburg suburb of Yuzhny.
